Automatic Movement

Automatic movement watches are the second type of mechanical movement, but instead of requiring regular winding, they are wound automatically by the movement of the wearer’s wrist. These watches are also known as “self-winding” and are very popular due to the minimal amount of effort needed to keep the timepiece running accurately. Power is harnessed from the movement of a rotor that rotates freely within the timepiece. As the wrist moves, the rotor spins and this sends power throughout the watch.

Quartz Movement

Quartz movements use a battery to power the watch. The battery sends an electrical current to a quartz crystal which vibrates, oscillating the mechanisms that keep time and power the complications. Quartz movements are known for their incredible accuracy and are very low maintenance with the exception of regular battery changes. Watches with this movement are fairly inexpensive. In luxury watch brands, quartz movements are specifically designed to meet the strict standards of the brand.
